Interview With Maelle (5y 5m)
Below is an interview with my daughter. Her answers are verbatim - I did not interrupt her, ask her any clarifying questions, or prompt her for further details. Follow this link to see her answers from last year. I hope to repeat this interview at least once a year to see how her answers develop as she ages.
Where do you live? I live in Calgary at… (proceeds to tell me our exact address).
How old are you? I am 5 years old and I’ll soon be 5 and a half. Next month!
What is your favourite food? I like s’more pancakes. It’s my favourite food.
What is your favourite animal? Bunny. Snowshoe hare I mean. Use snowshoe hare instead. They are so soft and furry and cuddly and cute and they live in our neighbourhood.
What makes you happy? Being with my family makes me feel very happy. I like being with them because they give me everything that I need. They love me and care for me. I love my Auntie so much she’s my number one girl.
What makes you sad? When someone says mean stuff to me because it makes me feel a little left out.
What makes you laugh? Seeing my Dad scare me. When Linden is so funny - (Linden swings a sticky guy and screams) - just like that. Are you going to write what Linden is doing? That would be funny. What else Mommy?
What is love? Love is when you give kisses and hugs. It’s a good feeling to me. It’s a very good feeling. I love my family and it’s a very good feeling to love someone. You should try it!
What are you really good at? Oooo gymnastics. I am good at the bars like doing cast, cast, cast, back hip circles. I always try my best at it.
What are you not so good at? I am not so good at writing neatly. I am not really good at butterfly stroke during swimming but I sure do practice.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I really really want to be a ballerina and I want to be a vet because I love bunnies and one day maybe a bunny will come in.
What does your Daddy do for work? He’s a consultant. He tells people how to do things better - how to do their job better.
What does your Mommy do for work? My mommy takes care of the house, takes care of us, takes us to school. She does all the stuff at home. She does a lot because daddy works away lots and lots.
What is one thing your Daddy always says? Be kind. I love you.
What is one thing your Mommy always says? I wouldn’t change a thing about you.
Where is your favourite place to be? With Auntie because I love her so much.
If you could do anything right now, what would you want to do? I would want to have a playdate. I love playdates. Actually, I would go to Disneyland.
What should your brother know? To be kind. (She turns and addresses her brother) Linden, don’t push, or hit, or kick. That is what good dinos and good Spider-men do.
What is your favourite thing to play? My favourite thing to play is pretend with Daddy. I like Frozen pretend. Daddy is Kristoff, Linden is Olaf, and I am Elsa.
What is the most special thing you own? My brother because he is so sweet to me and I love playing with him because he shares toys with me.
